Residents of Communities 16, 17, 18, and 19 in Lashibi, within the Tema West Municipality of the  Greater Accra Region, have voiced growing frustration over what they describe as a long-standing and worsening water crisis that has left many households without reliable access to clean water.

At a town hall meeting held over the weekend, the residents expressed anger and disappointment at the Ghana Water Limited (GWL) for failing to provide a consistent water supply despite issuing monthly bills.

Many complained that their taps have been dry for months, forcing them to depend on private water tanker operators who charge exorbitant prices.

“This situation is unbearable,” one resident lamented. “We are paying for a service we don’t receive, and we still have to buy water every week at high costs just to survive.”

Beyond the water shortages, residents also highlighted poor road conditions, flooding, and rising insecurity as major challenges affecting the quality of life in the area.

Responding to the concerns, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Tema West, Mr. Ludwig Teye Totimeh, acknowledged the severity of the water crisis.

He attributed part of the problem to the shutdown of the Teshie Desalination Plant and intermittent power supply, which have disrupted water distribution.

Mr. Totimeh disclosed that the Assembly has initiated plans to construct community boreholes across the affected areas to serve as an alternative water source during periods of scarcity.

The Assemblyman for Lashibi, Mr Justice Tettey, commended residents for their active participation in the meeting and reiterated that their concerns would be urgently relayed to the appropriate government agencies.

He stressed the need for a comprehensive intervention to address both the water and infrastructure challenges, noting that “access to water and good roads is not a privilege but a right every citizen deserves.”
