Mahama assures public: Ofankor-Nsawam highway will proceed alongside new Accra–Kumasi Expressway
President John Dramani Mahama has moved to calm growing public concern over the fate of the Ofankor–Nsawam highway, assuring Ghanaians that the road will not be abandoned even as work advances on the planned Accra–Kumasi Expressway.
Speaking during an inspection of the Ofankor-Nsawam stretch on Wednesday, President Mahama emphasised that both the existing highway upgrade and the new expressway remain government priorities.
He said the dual roads will co-exist, serving different but complementary roles — the upgraded highway for regular traffic and the expressway as a faster alternative for travellers and heavy cargo.
The President expressed satisfaction at the pace of work on the 33.4-kilometre Ofankor–Nsawam segment, now reported to be about 77 percent complete.
Contractors have been urged to maintain momentum, with Mahama forecasting that the road could be ready by April 2026 — ahead of the previously anticipated July 2026 handover.
He also noted that the government had cleared substantial arrears owed to the contractor, thereby removing a major obstacle to progress.
Under the government’s “Big Push” infrastructure programme, adequate funding has been allocated to ensure timely completion.
President Mahama urged the contractors to combine speed with quality, stressing that the road must meet high construction standards to serve commuters, goods transporters, and the country’s broader development needs.
With this assurance, the government seeks to reassure Ghanaians that the existing highway upgrade and the new expressway plan are not mutually exclusive, but are being pursued together to improve connectivity between Accra, Nsawam, Kumasi and beyond.
