MP for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah

Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has expressed sympathy to victims affected by the floods, fire outbreaks, and a building collapse that occurred during Wednesday night’s heavy rains in parts of the Greater Accra Region.

In a message shared following the incidents, the former Information Minister prayed for strength, healing, and comfort for those impacted by the disasters.

The adverse weather conditions triggered widespread flooding across several communities and led to multiple emergency situations, prompting swift intervention by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

According to the Fire Service, personnel responded to a number of incidents on Wednesday, June 3, successfully carrying out rescue operations and preventing significant loss of life and property.

One of the first incidents was recorded at Oyarifa around 5:30 p.m., where firefighters from the Madina Fire Station were called to extinguish a fire involving an Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) meter installation at a residential property.

The fire was brought under control within an hour, and no casualties were reported.

The same team later responded to separate flood emergencies at Oyarifa KB Junction and Old Ashongman near Bohye Church, where nine people stranded by rising floodwaters were safely rescued.

At approximately 9:49 p.m., emergency crews were dispatched to the Kanda Post Office area after underground electrical cables behind a residential building caught fire. Firefighters quickly contained the blaze, with no injuries or deaths recorded. Investigations have since been launched to establish the cause of the incident.

Elsewhere, personnel from the Accra City Fire Station battled a major fire outbreak at the Accra Water Works area, opposite the Accra Central Police Station, after receiving a distress call at about 8:05 p.m.

In the early hours of Thursday, firefighters were again called into action to contain a fire that broke out in a shop at Makola, directly opposite the Accra City Fire Station.

The Fire Service says its rapid response helped minimise damage and avert casualties despite the challenging weather conditions that affected several parts of the capital.
