The World Health Organisation (WHO) has advised the public to remain alert and take necessary precautions as Ghana battles a growing outbreak of Mpox.

According to Dr Fiona Braka, the WHO Representative to Ghana, the country is among approximately 15 African nations currently experiencing active Mpox outbreaks.

She said the disease has spread across East, Central, West, and Southern Africa, with Ghana recording 250 cases and one death in 14 out of its 16 regions.

This is not the first time Ghana has reported Mpox infections, as cases were reported late last year and successfully addressed.

Mpox is a manageable disease, and early detection, isolation of cases, and supportive treatment are key to controlling its spread.

Dr Braka said WHO has supported Ghana's response efforts by donating essential supplies to ensure prompt diagnosis and providing guidelines for case management, contact tracing, and treatment.

She advised the public to be aware of the symptoms, report suspected cases early, and avoid close contact with infected individuals.

Dr Braka believes that with the capacity already in place and close collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the outbreak can be brought under control.

Speaking at the stakeholder’s engagement on HPV vaccine introduction in Ghana, she urged everyone to take personal responsibility, follow preventive measures, and stay informed to stop the further spread of Mpox.

For his part, the Ashanti regional Director of Health Services, Dr Fred Adomako Boateng, explained the HPV vaccine introduction in preventing cervical cancers.
