The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has announced plans to roll out a nationwide inspection of vehicle fire extinguishers beginning Thursday, December 18, 2025, to ensure that motorists comply with fire safety requirements.

According to the Service, the operation will be led by the GNFS Fire Safety Compliance Taskforce in collaboration with the National Road Safety Authority and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, the GNFS explained that the exercise is intended to enforce regulations mandating all vehicles to carry at least one approved and certified portable fire extinguisher.

As part of the operation, officers will carry out roadside safety inspections, verify the condition of fire extinguishers, and issue GNFS compliance tags to vehicles found with functional equipment. Motorists will also receive guidance on the correct handling and maintenance of fire extinguishers, in accordance with the Ghana National Fire Service Act, 1997 (Act 537).

The Service said it would work closely with transport unions and driver associations nationwide to raise awareness about fire safety, prevention, and emergency preparedness.

Vehicle owners and drivers have been advised to confirm that their fire extinguishers are in good working condition by checking pressure indicators, expiry dates, and security seals. Extinguishers must also be properly fixed inside vehicles and positioned for quick access.

In addition, motorists will be educated on the proper use of portable extinguishers and encouraged to equip their vehicles with other safety essentials such as warning triangles and first-aid boxes.

The GNFS emphasized that swift response is critical in vehicle fire incidents, noting that immediate access to a working fire extinguisher can prevent minor fires from escalating into fatal situations.

The Service reaffirmed its commitment to improving road safety nationwide through sustained public education and strict enforcement of fire safety standards.
