The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has given the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) a 48-hour deadline to resolve ongoing issues with its prepaid metering system following widespread consumer complaints about rapid depletion of electricity units.

The directive was issued on Thursday, February 26, 2026, after an emergency meeting between the regulator and the power distributor, during which ECG was required to submit a detailed report explaining the situation and outlining corrective measures.

Acting Executive Secretary Dr Shafic Suleman told Channel One TV that the move is intended to protect consumer interests and ensure equitable access to electricity.

He noted that ECG is expected to act promptly to address the problem and warned that the Commission would take legal action if the company fails to comply.

This development comes as frustration mounts among prepaid electricity customers, many of whom are calling for greater transparency and accountability from ECG.
