Media talent Paa Kwesi Asare has won the 2023 BBC News Komla Dumor Award.

A TV personality at Accra-based TV3, the 36-year-old is the first Ghanaian journalist to win the prestigious award.

However, overall, the news anchor is the eighth recipient, in the world.

In view of his award, Mr Asare will, over three months, work with British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) News teams in London, UK, garnering international experience across TV, radio and online.

He will also travel to an African country to report on a story that will be broadcast across the world by the BBC.

In addition, he will be mentored by star BBC journalists.

According to a BBC report, the judges were impressed by Asare’s strong journalism and his ability to explain complex topics compellingly and clearly.

On his part, the Ghanaian journalist noted: “This is a watershed moment in my career and an opportunity I’ll grab with both hands.”

“I feel very elated to have won the BBC News Komla Dumor Award.

“This is arguably the most prestigious award for any African journalist. Komla’s talent is one that I greatly admired and to be found worthy of walking in his shoes is not only a joy but also a great privilege.”

The Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has congratulated Asare, calling the historic win "heartwarming".

The BBC News Komla Dumor Award was created as a tribute to Ghanaian journalist Komla Dumor who was a BBC World News presenter. Dumor was loved for his eloquence, dedication to showing a rich and diverse perspective of Africa, his storytelling, humour and disarming smile. Having what some regarded a meteoric rise to stardom, he died suddenly in 2014. He was 41.

Paa Kwesi Asare being the latest recipient, other winners of the BBC News Komla Dumor Award include Zambian Dingindaba Jonah Buyoya, Kenyan Victoria Rubadiri, Ugandan Solomon Serwanjja, Kenyan Waihiga Mwaura, Nigerian Amina Yuguda, Nigerian Didi Akinyelure and the first winner Ugandan Nancy Kacungira (2015).
