Police withdraw injunction against 'OccupyJulorbiHouse' protesters
The Accra High Court has made a decision regarding an injunction filed by the Ghana Police Service against the organisers of the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest.
The police had filed the injunction and had it served by lawyers from Democracy Hub, Atuguba & Associates, on September 19. However, there was a dispute over the service of the injunction, with the Democracy Hub organisers denying that they had received it, resulting in a back-and-forth between them and the police.
This dispute affected the first day of the planned three-day protest, as the police considered those who gathered at the meeting point, the 37 Lorry Station in the Greater Accra Region, to be in defiance of their orders.
Those gathered were arrested and released on the same day, Thursday, September 21, only to return on Friday and Saturday to continue the demonstration.
In a ruling on the matter, the Presiding Judge, Edward Twum, announced that the application for the injunction was withdrawn by the police.
He noted that although the court processes were served on the solicitors of the respondent, there was no proof of service to Benjamin Akuffo Darko, the respondent in the case.
Justice Twum explained that since there was no court order and the protest had already taken place, the only remaining option was to withdraw the application, as it had become irrelevant.
