President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned a newly completed chancery for Ghana’s embassy in Addis Ababa, marking what officials describe as a significant step in strengthening the country’s diplomatic footprint in Ethiopia and within Africa’s diplomatic capital.

The project, which commenced in 2016, has taken nearly a decade to complete. Its delivery signals Ghana’s renewed commitment to deepening bilateral relations with Ethiopia and reinforcing engagement with key continental institutions headquartered in the city, including the African Union.

The modern facility is expected to enhance operations at the mission by improving working conditions for diplomatic staff and strengthening consular services for Ghanaians resident in Ethiopia. It will also provide a suitable and dignified setting for high-level meetings, official functions and other diplomatic engagements.

Addis Ababa hosts the headquarters of the African Union, making the Ghanaian mission strategically important to the country’s foreign policy objectives.

Present at the commissioning ceremony was Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister, Gedion Timothewos, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, members of the diplomatic corps in Addis Ababa, as well as representatives of the Ghanaian community in Ethiopia.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, President Mahama described the completion of the chancery as a testament to Ghana’s enduring diplomatic vision. He noted that beyond serving administrative functions, the building symbolises Ghana’s leadership role and active participation in continental affairs.

The new chancery will help position Ghana more effectively within Africa’s diplomatic landscape while supporting stronger cooperation with regional and international partners.
