Speaker Bagbin warns of dual assault from globalisation, xenophobia ahead of African Inter-Parliamentary Conference

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has expressed concern over the growing threats of cultural erosion and xenophobia to Africa’s values, family systems, and sovereignty.

Speaking on Monday, June 1, during a press briefing, Bagbin stated that African values are under a "dual assault" from the cultural influences of globalisation and rising internal xenophobic tensions.

He warned that divisions among Africans and the loss of indigenous languages and traditions risk undermining the continent’s identity.

“This year’s conference is the fourth session and is being organised at a time when the African continent is confronted with evolving social, cultural and ideological challenges which continue to impact our family systems, sovereignty and treasured values," Bagbin said.

"We are meeting at a moment when African values face a dual assault. One, the cultural erosion of globalisation on one side and two, the painful rise of xenophobia within our own continent on the other.”

He called for greater unity across the continent to counter these challenges, stating, “When African brothers stand against African brothers, when our children no longer speak their mother tongues, when external ideologies are packaged as universal truths, then Africa must speak with one voice.”

The remarks come ahead of the 4th African Inter-Parliamentary Conference on Family and Sovereignty, which will take place in Ghana's Parliamentary Chamber from Wednesday, June 3 to Saturday, June 6, 2026.

The event will bring together parliamentarians and regional stakeholders to deliberate on family values, sovereignty, and cultural identity.
