Statue erected in honour of late President Jerry John Rawlings at Keta-Dzelukope
A statue commemorating the late former President Jerry John Rawlings has been unveiled at Keta-Dzelukope in the Volta Region, in recognition of his enduring legacy and strong ancestral ties to the area.
The unveiling ceremony drew a large gathering of residents, traditional leaders, party faithful, and admirers of the late statesman, who came together to honour a leader widely remembered for his bold leadership style and advocacy for social justice.
The monument portrays Rawlings in a commanding stance, symbolising his influential role in shaping Ghana’s political landscape.
Speakers at the event to paid tribute to Rawlings’ contributions to democratic governance, accountability in public office, and his dedication to improving the lives of ordinary Ghanaians.
They reflected on his time as Head of State and later as President of the Fourth Republic, noting that many of his policies and reforms continue to shape national conversations.
Keta-Dzelukope was selected as the location for the statue in recognition of Rawlings’ ancestral roots in the community, making the monument both a national symbol of remembrance and a source of local pride.
Traditional authorities present described the statue as a powerful educational tool for younger generations, encouraging them to embrace the values of discipline, patriotism, and leadership.
The ceremony was marked by colourful cultural performances and a wreath-laying in Rawlings’ honour, lending both celebration and solemn reflection to the occasion.
Organisers said the monument is intended to serve as a historical landmark and a space for reflection on Ghana’s political journey.
Although Jerry John Rawlings passed away in November 2020, his supporters say his ideals and influence remain firmly alive, with the Keta-Dzelukope statue standing as a lasting tribute to his life and contributions to Ghana.
