Upper West records 15 suspected meningitis cases, two deaths confirmed
The Upper West Region has recorded 15 suspected meningitis infections so far this season, with laboratory tests confirming four cases and two deaths reported.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, the Regional Director of Health Services, Dr Josephat Nyuzaghl, said the current situation is far less severe than what was experienced last year. In the previous meningitis season, the region registered 269 suspected cases, 36 of which were confirmed, resulting in 18 deaths.
He noted that the case fatality rate last year stood at about 6.7 percent, which was below the World Health Organisation’s threshold of 10 percent. According to Dr Nyuzaghl, most of the confirmed infections in 2025 were linked to Streptococcus pneumoniae and largely affected adolescents and young adults between 11 and 20 years, with Nadowli and Nandom emerging as the hardest-hit districts.
Dr Nyuzaghl explained that the ongoing 2025–2026 meningitis season began in late October and is expected to end around April. He said the lower number of cases and deaths recorded so far points to improved preparedness and response measures by health authorities.
“We are seeing a reduction in both infections and fatalities compared to last year, which suggests that the interventions we put in place are yielding results,” he stated.
He added that the Regional Health Directorate has stepped up disease surveillance, enhanced access to care, and intensified public education to curb the spread of the disease. He also called on the media and community leaders to support efforts to raise awareness about early symptoms and the need for immediate medical care.
Dr Nyuzaghl assured residents that the health system remains on high alert, stressing that prompt reporting, quick treatment, and sustained public awareness remain key to preventing a major outbreak.
