Volta Regional Minister James Gunu has promised in the middle of the water crisis in Ho, he will ensure water was supplied to various hospitals, schools, and other essential facilities and institutions to enhance their service delivery to the public.

The initiative is expected to commence today, Tuesday, February 4, 2025, as it comes at the back of the recent shortage of potable water in Ho, the Volta Regional Capital, resulting from frequent mechanical breakdown at the Kpeve Water Treatment Plant.

Addressing the media after visiting the treatment plant on Monday, Mr Gunu assured his outfit would work collaboratively with stakeholders to resolve the challenge and restore water supply to the affected areas as soon as possible.

“We understand the difficulties that the water crisis has imposed on our people, and we are committed to finding a lasting solution to the problem,” he said.

“We are working to ensure that our hospitals, schools, and other critical institutions have access to water, despite the challenges we are facing.”

Meanwhile, the minister has spent his first working day at the treatment plant, accompanied by the Ho Central Member of Parliament, Mr Richmond Edem Kofi Kpotosu, and the Acting Managing Director of Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Mr Adam Mutawakilu, as well as other stakeholders, assessing the situation on site.

It was discovered the facility, which was designed to run on three pumps, was currently operating with only one pump, resulting in its frequent breakdown.

According to officials of the GWCL, efforts were underway to resolve the issue, with an assurance of early completion to restore supply by the weekend.

To boost pressure, the MD has directed that two pumps be brought in from another substation. As a long-term solution, the minister said the government was committed to expanding the water treatment facility to improve water supply to the catchment areas.

He assured the management of the GWCL that President John Dramani Mahama had ordered for new machines which are expected to be delivered to Ghana in March 2025.

Since the beginning of the year, Ho and its environs have been without potable water supply due to the breakdown of a shaft, a situation that has left many residents to hunt for water over long distances.

Residents have appealed to the GWCL to remedy the situation.

Meanwhile, despite the assurances of water supply by Regional Minister James Gunu, a visit to some hospitals within the municipality today by Class Media Group (CMG) reporter Solomon Ahiable revealed the promised water was yet to be delivered, leaving hospitals to order their water.
