Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang is expected to pay a working visit to the Ministry of Transport on Friday, January 16, to hold talks with officials over the ongoing difficulties affecting public transport, particularly within the Greater Accra Region.

The visit follows increasing complaints from commuters about the limited number of commercial vehicles during rush hours, rising transport charges, and prolonged waiting times in the mornings and evenings.

Deliberations are anticipated to centre on steps already being taken by the ministry, alongside new strategies being considered to tackle the shortage of buses and reduce the pressure on passengers.

The meeting forms part of wider government initiatives aimed at enhancing movement within the capital and restoring efficiency to the public transport system. In a related development, the Ministry of Transport is also expected to convene discussions with the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other transport associations as authorities seek sustainable solutions to the situation.

The urgency of these consultations comes after difficult scenes across several parts of Accra on Thursday evening, when a severe lack of commercial buses caused major disruptions along key routes. On the Achimota Old Road, some commuters resorted to riding in cargo trucks to reach their destinations, while at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, passengers heading toward Amasaman and nearby areas waited for long stretches. In some cases, individuals stood for close to an hour without finding a vehicle.

Comparable conditions were observed on other major roads, as the limited availability of buses forced many commuters to search desperately for alternative transport options.
