West Africa on alert as ECOWAS announces state of emergency
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced a regional state of emergency in response to a surge in coups and attempted military uprisings across West Africa.
The declaration was issued on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, by ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray during the 55th session of the Mediation and Security Council at the ministerial level in Abuja.
Touray noted that the recent developments highlight a critical moment for the region, stressing the need for deeper reflection on the direction of democratic governance and stronger measures to safeguard stability within member states.
The move comes at a time when several West African countries are facing heightened political tensions, raising fears about the durability of democratic institutions and peace in the sub-region.
