The Ashanti regional police command has arrested one suspect in connection with a mob attack on two alleged thieves that led to the lynching of one of them at Napoleon Mining site at Manso Atwere in the Amansie West District of the region.
The police says the suspect, Kwame Dapaa, 31, is currently in their custody and assisting with investigations while another suspect, only known as "Culture", is on the run.
The Public Relations Officer of the regional police command, ASP Godwin Ahianyo, told the media that the deceased, Ernest Kwabena Poku, aka "Lilwin", and the other victim, identified only as Ernest, allegedly stole a gold ore at the mining site on Tuesday, 10 August 2021.
He said the two alleged thieves were assaulted by the suspects, leading to the death of "Lilwin".
Mr Ahianyo said the owner of the mining concession, Mr Bismarck Okrah, alias "Aya", was invited to assist the police with investigations.
He said the command has also intercepted a video footage of the assault trending on social media for evidential purposes.
Mr Ahianyo advised all those who were involved in perpetrating the act to own up in their interest or be arrested to face the full rigours of the law.
Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been deposited at St. Martins Catholic Hospital morgue at Agroyesum for preservation and autopsy.
