The Koforidua High Court has directed that a pregnancy test be conducted on 25-year-old Vera Asare before sentencing her over an acid attack that resulted in the death of her boyfriend, Daniel Omane.

The court’s order, issued during proceedings in the Eastern Region, temporarily delays sentencing while authorities determine her medical status.

Asare was convicted for attacking Omane, a mobile phone dealer popularly known as Anelka, with acid on November 29, 2024, in Koforidua.

Prosecutors said the assault followed accusations of infidelity.

After the incident, Omane was admitted to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), where he received treatment for severe injuries for several months. He later died on July 25, 2025. He has since been buried. The couple shared a three-year-old child.

Courtroom proceedings on Monday morning were marked by emotional scenes, as relatives of the deceased reacted angrily to the judge’s decision to postpone sentencing pending the outcome of the pregnancy test.

The case has attracted widespread public attention due to the tragic outcome and the court’s procedural step ahead of sentencing, with many closely following developments as the matter returns to court for final judgment.
