GTA, GPS probe alleged kidnapping and extortion of Black American tourists
The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has acknowledged a video circulating on social media in which some visiting Black Americans allege they were kidnapped and extorted by individuals claiming to be police officers.
In a statement, the authority said the Ghana Police Service (GPS), in collaboration with the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), has launched a full-scale investigation into the disturbing claims.
“These agencies are handling the issue with the urgency and seriousness it deserves, and the public will be uapdated upon the conclusion of their work,” the GTA assured.
Since the launch of the Year of Return in 2019, Ghana has consistently welcomed thousands of visitors during the end-of-year festivities, and this December is no exception. However, security concerns could negatively affect the tourism sector, as potential visitors may reconsider travel plans, shorten their stays, or limit their activities in the country.
The GTA, nevertheless, reassured tourists and the general public that Ghana “remains a safe and trusted destination,” stressing that security measures have been reinforced nationwide.
“Our security systems, supported by national law enforcement agencies and tourism sector partners, have been reinforced to guarantee the safety, comfort and peace of mind of all visitors throughout the festive season,” the statement said.
The authority urged the public to remain calm and allow the security agencies to complete their work. Visitors who require assistance or wish to make enquiries have been encouraged to contact the GTA on 057 957 9019, 030 700 7100, or via WhatsApp on 054 635 2240.
“Ghana remains open, secure and welcoming. Visitors should have full confidence in their safety,” the GTA emphasised.
Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has recently strengthened the capacity of the Ghana Police Service with the deployment of 40 new armoured vehicles to enhance security operations, particularly during the Christmas and New Year festivities. He has also warned criminal networks that Ghana will not cede any street or community to lawlessness, assuring the public that perpetrators will be pursued and brought to justice.
