High Court defers judgment in Chairman Wontumi's Samreboi mining case to July 20
The Accra High Court has deferred judgment in the Samreboi mining case involving Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, to July 20, 2026.
The decision follows an application by the newly appointed counsel for Chairman Wontumi and Akonta Mining Company Limited, lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea, seeking additional time to file written submissions on behalf of his clients.
The application, brought under the inherent jurisdiction of the court, requested a deferral of the judgment to allow new counsel to obtain and review the certified record of proceedings and all processes filed in the case before preparing what the application described as credible and competent written submissions.
The court granted the application and adjourned proceedings, fixing 20 July 2026 as the new date for judgment.
The application was filed on behalf of the first and third accused persons, Bernard Antwi Boasiako and Akonta Mining Company Limited.
The Republic is the respondent in the case, while Bernard Antwi Boasiako, Kwame Antwi and Akonta Mining Company Limited are named as accused persons.
Court records show that the motion was filed on June 23, 2026 and served on both the Registrar of the High Court, Criminal Division, and the Attorney-General's Chambers.
Judgment in the case had originally been scheduled for July 3, 2026 before the court granted the application for a postponement.
