Man's arm amputated after policeman brutalises him with rifle

Crime
The victim, Felix Kwame Nortey

A police officer identified as Wisdom Glavui has battered the right arm of a motor rider resulting in amputation.

The policeman, who was on duty at the Asutsuare police barrier in the Shai District of the Greater Accra Region, used the butt of his rifle to repetitively hit the right arm of the 30-year-old victim, Felix Kwame Nortey.

The victim, who was commuting from Juapong to Ashiaman, sustained a fractured arm.

Narrating the incident, the victim’s mother, Gifty Nortey told ClassFMonline that: “It happened on 21 February 2021 when he came to visit me at Juapong and was on his way back to Accra. He was on a motorbike. His other brother was ahead of him on another motorbike".

“So, according to him, when they got to the Asutuare barrier, his brother passed without being stopped. So, he decided to slow down in case he is stopped. As he was approaching, he saw some policemen seated on a bench. One of them just hit his right arm with the rifle”.

She further noted that he was initially rushed to a nearby hospital but had to be moved to the VRA Hospital.

He was later transferred to the St Joseph Hospital in Koforidua where his arm was amputated because it was badly injured.

The mother of the victim stated that her son told her that he was hit without any provocation.

However, the officer claims that he hit the victim because he refused to stop when he was signalled to do so.

The case has been reported to the Asutuare police station.

The victim was discharged from the St Joseph Hospital on Monday, 23 March 2021.

The investigating officer, one Julius, when contacted by ClassFMonline.com, declined to comment further on the incident saying investigations are underway.
