O'Reilly SHS student arrested for stabbing classmate to death

A final-year student at the O’Reilly Senior High School (SHS) has been arrested by police for allegedly stabbing his classmate, Edward Borketey Sackey, to death.
The suspect stabbed his classmate during a violent confrontation on the school campus on Monday, 2 September 2024.
The family of the deceased, a final-year General Arts student at O’Reilly Senior High School in Accra, staged a protest at the school premises demanding justice for their deceased relative following the incident which occurred shortly after the 18-year-old completed a morning exam.
The family accused the school authorities of being careless.
According to a cousin of the deceased who witnessed the altercation, the deceased was involved in a fight with another student named Godwin, a final-year Visual Arts student, which escalated into violence.
“He had a paper in the morning and came to me that he was done with his paper. A few minutes later, we heard some noise at the back and asked what was wrong. They said it was Godwin and Edward fighting. I asked what the fight was about, and they said it was nothing serious,” she recounted.
The deceased’s cousin explained that the argument appeared trivial, initially stemming from a dispute over possessions.
“The whole thing was about “What do you have? I have this and that. You’re lying.” That was what brought the fight. So, I thought the whole thing was nothing,” she added.
However, the situation quickly turned dangerous.
“A few minutes later, the Godwin guy came up to me and asked me to warn my brother, or else his blood would flow, and I told him it had not gotten to that,” she narrated.
The deceased reportedly sought refuge from teachers present at the school when the chaos began, but they allegedly did nothing to intervene.
"When the chaos started, my brother ran to the teachers who were sitting under the tree in the school compound. I was calling the guy to stop, but they didn’t mind me," she said.
In a desperate bid to find help, she rushed to inform her uncle, who runs a shop near the school, but did not find him. Upon her return, she discovered that Edward had been fatally stabbed by Godwin.
"The guy is not someone to joke with. When he comes to school, he has this small bag which contains a lot of harmful substances like a knife," she revealed.
The family has called on the authorities to thoroughly investigate the incident and bring those responsible to justice.
