Police arrest 7 for disrupting NPP constituency elections at Wiamoase
The Ashanti North Regional Police Command has restored calm at Wiamoase following disturbances that disrupted the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Effiduase Asokore (Efigya Sekyere East) Constituency Executive Elections on Sunday, July 12, 2026.
The incident occurred at around 7:45 AM at the SDA Church polling station. According to a press release signed by Assistant Superintendent Emmanuel Agbodzi of the Ashanti North Public Affairs unit, a 43-year-old man identified as Kwame Afrifa Mensah led a group of approximately 30 heavily built men ("macho men") to the polling venue.
When security personnel approached the group to question their presence, the men became aggressive, attacked the police officers, and disrupted the voting process by throwing electoral materials onto the ground.
Police swiftly intervened, arresting the suspected ringleader, Kwame Afrifa Mensah, along with six other members of the group. The remaining suspects escaped the scene, and police operations are currently underway to apprehend them.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Mensah disrupted the process under the claim that his supporters had been sidelined, further alleging that he had secured an interlocutory injunction to halt the polls. However, the police stated that neither the Electoral Commission (EC) nor the police administration had received any court order directing a suspension of the election.
Following the police intervention, order was restored, and voting resumed under tight security. The election concluded peacefully at approximately 4:00 PM, allowing the Electoral Commission to officially declare the results.
Later in the day, suspect Kwame Afrifa Mensah and another suspect, 44-year-old Osman Awuni, complained of ill health. Both individuals were transported to the Mampong Government Hospital, where they were admitted and remain under police guard while receiving treatment.
The Police Command has assured the public that investigations are ongoing and further updates will be provided as the case develops.
