Police gun down suspected robbery kingpin after intelligence-led operation
Police have shot and killed a suspected armed robber during an intelligence-led operation in the Awutu Senya District of the Central Region, following investigations into a violent robbery attack on a 77-year-old woman at Labone.
The suspect, identified as Clement Kofi Aidoo, also known by several aliases including Yaw, Paddy and Joseph Abequaye, was fatally wounded after allegedly attacking officers with a cutlass while attempting to evade arrest.
The operation stemmed from a petition filed on January 30, 2026, by Madam Christiana Frimpong to the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Christian Tetteh Yohunu, over a robbery at her residence on December 4, 2025.
According to police, Madam Frimpong was attacked in her bedroom by armed men who tied her hands and legs, covered her face with a plastic bag, and made away with her Toyota Hilux pickup with registration number GW 9834-25, an iPhone 16 Pro Max, and other personal belongings.
The petition was subsequently referred to the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit (AARU) of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters for investigation.
After days of intelligence gathering, a team of investigators led by ASP James Atampuri moved to Danso near Bawjiase on February 6, 2026, at about 1:30 a.m., where the suspect was located.
Police said upon sighting the officers, Aidoo allegedly jumped through a window, wielding a sharp cutlass and attempted to attack the team. Officers opened fire, critically injuring him.
He was rushed to the Police Hospital but was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.
His body has since been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
During the operation, police retrieved the stolen Toyota Hilux, several documents, the complainant’s mobile phone, and identification cards, including a Voter’s ID card and a Police ID card bearing the name No. 48935 G/Sgt Daniel Kusi Appiah. All items have been retained as exhibits.
Further investigations led to the invitation of G/Sgt Appiah, who is stationed at the Kaneshie Divisional Headquarters, to assist with inquiries.
He told investigators that in November 2025, while searching for a house help for his ailing father, he engaged the suspect through KKN Domestic and Recruitment Agency at Bubuashie.
According to him, the suspect began work at his residence on November 1, 2025, but allegedly fled two weeks later with his Toyota Camry saloon car (GC 123-12), police and voter ID cards, GHS12,200 in cash, and other personal effects while he was at Ridge Hospital attending to his father.
The case was reported to the Kaneshie Police Station, where investigations identified the suspect as a native of Bontroase in the Central Region, with his real name given as Joseph Obessi.
On January 25, 2026, he was reportedly sighted with the stolen Camry at Bontroase.
A police pursuit forced him to abandon the vehicle at Kojoacquah Village before escaping.
Police say investigations are ongoing to determine whether the suspect was linked to other robbery incidents.
