Police officers at the Kantanso–Asankare barrier in the Juaso District have intercepted a passenger bus conveying a large quantity of ammunition without lawful authority.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at about 7:00 p.m., when officers on routine duty stopped a Kia Grand Bird bus with registration number AK 1309–21.

The vehicle, which was travelling from Accra to Tamale en route to Savulegu, was being driven by 42-year-old Mohammed Gzali, with his mate, Mohammed Jabir, aged 22, and 45 passengers on board.

During the inspection, police officers became suspicious that the vehicle might be transporting prohibited items and immediately alerted their superiors.

The Divisional Commander, accompanied by the Juaso District Commander and the District Crime Officer, arrived at the scene to supervise a thorough search of the bus.

The search led to the discovery of a fertiliser sack containing 1,050 rounds of AAA and BB cartridge ammunition.

Upon questioning, the driver told police that the sack was handed to him by an unknown individual as a parcel, which was to be delivered to a person identified only as “Oboye” in Tamale.

Following the discovery, the bus was impounded and the ammunition seized as exhibits.

The driver and his mate have been taken into police custody and are currently assisting with investigations.

Police say investigations are ongoing to establish the source and intended use of the ammunition, as well as to identify all persons connected to the consignment.
