The Ghana Police Service has placed a GHS20,000 bounty on the heads of two gang leaders in connection with the recent bloody clashes at Nima in Accra.

The police announced this at a press conference on Wednesday, 19 January 2022.

According to the police, it is working to reduce gangsterism across the country.

The Director of Public Affairs, ACP Kwesi Ofori, said: “It takes a gang, a criminal gang designed, to perpetuate violence in that community”.

“Gangsterism of this height will not be accepted by the Ghana Police Service, and we will do whatever it takes to make sure we nip them in the bud and dismantle their network.”

ACP Ofori further noted that the two groups are fighting for supremacy in their “quest to lord it over each other” and “to make sure that they intimidate their opponents”, adding that “there’ve been occasions where they’ve had a lot of fights at the lower level without coming to light and their activities have been monitored by the Nima police closely over the last two years.”

He added: “Any member of the public who offers credible information that leads to their arrest, will be given that amount. GHS20,000 has been placed on their heads.” 

Both gangs have appeared before the Municipal Security Council in the past.

They were dealt with and warned, accordingly.

Both groups were also at the Nima police 2 years ago and were bonded until they exhibited mass violence again.  

Nima witnessed gangsterism and mass violence around 3.30 pm on Tuesday, 18 January 2022 when two rival groups led respectively by Kumordzi, alias Ibrahim Hussein; and Bombom, alias Ali Awudu, who have always disagreed on issues, went all out on the streets of Nima.

Seven suspects were initially arrested in connection with the violence.

Two more suspects were arrested later, bringing the number to nine.

The leaders of the two rival groups are, however, still at large.
