Seven coup suspects denied bail
Seven of the 10 suspects being tried for attempting to “destabilise” the Akufo-Addo government will remain in custody until January 2020, as the criminal division of the Accra High Court presided over by Justice Georgina Mensa-Datsa, has denied them bail.
Dr Frederick Yao Mac-Palm, Dornyah “Ezor” Kafui (a weapon manufacturer), Bright Allan Debrah Ofosu (known by his monikers BB or ADC), a freight manager; Gershun Akpa, a civilian employee of the Armed Forces; Colonel Samuel Kojo Gameli, Corporal Seidu Abubakar and Sylvester Akanbiri, all appeared before the court on Friday, 20 December 2019.
They were rounded up, a few months ago, by operatives of National Security and the Bureau of National Investigations for allegedly plotting a coup d’etat.
Guns and explosives were retrieved from a hospital at Alajo in Accra, where the suspects had, allegedly, been meeting to plot their takeover of the country’s government.
They Are being tried for treason along with three others, including police chief ACP Dr Benjamin Agordzo.
Ruling on the application filed by their lawyer, Mr Victor Kodjogah Adawudu, the court said: “The application for bail will be repeated if no progress is made in the prosecution by the end of January 2020”.
The eighth suspect, Lance Corporal Ali Solomon, has also put in a similar application through his lawyer while ACP Agordzo is also expected to move his bail application today, Friday, 20 December 2019 at the Financial and Economic Court presided over by Justice Afia Serwah Asare Botwe.
The only female suspect among them, WO2 Esther Saan, is the only one granted bail so far.
