Six arrested after police gun battle with suspected landguards in Accra
Six suspected landguards have been arrested following a violent confrontation with police during a response to a distress call involving gunfire at a work site in Accra.
The incident occurred on Friday, January 10, 2026, at about 12:50 p.m., when police officers responded to reports that a large group of armed men had opened fire on workers at the location.
Upon arrival, officers encountered about 50 men allegedly shooting at the workers.
Police returned fire and pursued the suspects into a nearby bush.
During the operation, six suspects were arrested, while others managed to escape.
A search conducted at the time of the arrest led to the retrieval of several firearms and ammunition, including one AK-47 rifle loaded with five rounds of ammunition, one Luger T9 pistol with five rounds of ammunition, and one Regard MC pistol with 13 rounds of ammunition.
Four motorbikes believed to have been used by the suspects were also intercepted.
The arrested suspects, together with the seized weapons, ammunition, and motorbikes, have been transferred to the Accra Regional Police Headquarters, where they are currently in custody, assisting with investigations.
Police say investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest the remaining suspects involved in the incident, as authorities intensify efforts to clamp down on landguard-related activities and the illegal possession of firearms.
