The driver of the Member of Parliament for Suhum who allegedly hacked the head of an NPP constituency executive with a machete last Sunday has been charged with causing harm with an offensive weapon contrary to section 70 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

Samuel Kofi Agyei was today, Thursday, 2 September 2021 arraigned at the Koforidua Magistrate Court B and remanded.

The case has been adjourned to Tuesday, 7th September 2021, for ruling on the bail application for the accused.

Background:

On Saturday, 28 August 2021, the accused was alleged to have slashed the head of a 51-year-old Kwasi Amoani, a communicator of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) with a knife during a funeral melee. 

The victim has been receiving treatment at the emergency ward of the Suhum Government Hospital. 

The mayhem was sparked by a misunderstanding between supporters of the current MP and those of an aspirant while mourning a colleague at the Suhum Council. 

Another party member who got injured in the disturbance got treated at the same hospital and was later discharged.
