The Weija Gbawe Municipal Assembly in the Greater Accra Region has rolled out a major public school fencing initiative aimed at protecting school lands from encroachment and improving security across the municipality.

The project is being led by the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Felix Odartey Lamptey, and seeks to create a safer environment for teaching and learning.

Speaking to Class News correspondent Samuel Addo during the sod-cutting ceremony, Mr. Lamptey explained that the move will safeguard school property, curb truancy, and prevent unauthorised access to school premises.

“This project is a vital step towards ensuring our schools become havens of learning, where students can focus on their studies without distractions or dangers,” he said.

The Presiding Member of the Assembly, Mr Wilfred Ayitey Blankson, also raised concerns about the Weija Gbawe Methodist Primary School, located near a Muslim cemetery.

He noted that burials during school hours distract and disturb pupils, making fencing a necessary intervention.

“The cemetery’s presence has been a disturbance to students during burials, and fencing the school will help shield them from such distressing scenes,” he added.
