The Ghana Education Service (GES) has commended President John Mahama and the Minister of Education,  Haruna Iddrisu, for their commitment to restoring quality education, particularly at the basic and foundational levels.

According to GES, the government’s recent interventions, outlined during the President’s media encounter on Wednesday, September 10, mark a significant turning point for education in Ghana.

One of the key highlights is the record budgetary allocation of GH₵9.1 billion to basic education, the highest in the past 50 years.

GES described this as a major step toward revitalising foundational learning, which has long been neglected despite being the most crucial stage in a child’s academic journey.

Another milestone is the GH₵564 million set aside for the procurement of textbooks under the new curriculum, with GH₵415 million coming from the GETFund.

GES noted that this represents the single largest investment in textbooks in Ghana’s history, ensuring that schools are better resourced to improve teaching and learning.

The Service also highlighted the government’s nationwide distribution of sanitary pads to schoolgirls to reduce absenteeism linked to menstrual health challenges.

The initiative has already started in districts including Ada West, Gushegu, Ga East, Ejura, Ga West, and Ledzokuku, with more expected to follow.

In addition, the government has committed GH₵3.5 billion from GETFund to the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme in 2025, the highest allocation since its inception.

This funding is expected to improve student feeding, strengthen related services, and facilitate the gradual elimination of the double-track system.

GES further noted improvements in the SHS feeding programme, citing positive feedback from students, teachers, parents, and other stakeholders.

While the 2025 education budget was passed barely five months ago, GES said there is already visible progress in the sector. “These developments reflect the continued prioritisation of education as a driver of national growth and social transformation.

GES remains committed to ensuring that every Ghanaian child has access to quality education,” the Service said in a statement signed by its Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyi.
