Several students of the Ghana Technology University College (GTUC) who owe school fees as little as 20 and 80 pesewas, were prevented from sitting for their end-of-semester examination on Tuesday, 16 April 2019, a situation that sparked spontaneous agitation and demonstration by the students on campus.

The action of the university was based on an alleged zero-balance policy.

After the demonstration, the management met the SRC and agreed to allow students whose debts were below GHS250, to sit for the exam.


A subsequent notice from the SRC said it met with the management “to discuss issues of students not being allowed to write exams because they owed petty amounts. It was agreed that students who are owing less GHS250 be allowed to write the papers”.

Meanwhile, the SRC President, Mr Emmanuel Owusu Twum, on Wednesday, 17 April 2019, debunked the assertion that the students had agreed to a zero-balance policy with the management of the university.

“There was false news going round that the SRC were the ones who targeted zero-balance and that’s the reason why students were sacked. It wasn’t so. Two weeks ago, there was an exercise that was taken where the students were being sacked at the gate, the main entrances of the school and the SRC broke protocol to allow the students enter the school. So, some members of the administration were giving students a whole lot of stories which were untrue and saying a whole lot of things which were untrue about the SRC”, Twum told Accra-based Citi FM.
