Haruna Iddrisu calls for human-centred AI in education at London summit
The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has called for a human-centred approach to the deployment of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education, stressing that technology must support—rather than replace—teachers and learners.
Mr. Iddrisu made the remarks during a high-level summit in London focused on the role of Generative AI in education, with particular emphasis on safety, as well as the need for clear standards and benchmarks to guide the design and use of AI systems.
Speaking as a panellist, the Minister highlighted the growing application of Generative AI in learning environments and underscored the importance of intentionally designing AI tools to promote and protect human agency.
“At the centre of Generative AI in education are the two most important actors: the learner and the teacher,” he said.
“AI must be designed to support teachers to teach more effectively and enable learners to learn better.”
He cautioned against approaches that seek to position AI as a replacement for human input, arguing instead that Generative AI should play a complementary role within the education system.
Mr. Iddrisu further emphasised that human judgement and critical thinking remain the most essential cognitive abilities and cannot be replaced by technology.
According to him, these competencies must be safeguarded through appropriate legislation and policy frameworks capable of shaping the design, deployment and governance of Generative AI in education.
The summit brought together policymakers, educators, technology experts and global stakeholders to examine how AI can be responsibly integrated into education systems while ensuring safety, equity and accountability.
Mr. Iddrisu’s participation aligns with Ghana’s broader efforts to modernise its education sector through innovation, while maintaining strong ethical and regulatory safeguards around emerging technologies.
