It's important we open up legal education – SC nominee Justice Essah
Supreme Court nominee Justice Sophia Roseta Oduokuwa Bernasko Essah has championed the need to expand access to legal education in the country.
Justice Essah was speaking during her vetting session before Parliament on Tuesday,13 August 12024.
Justice Essah highlighted the necessity of broadening legal education to accommodate a diverse range of aspiring legal professionals.
“I think that as a country, it is important that we open up legal education as much as we can because we are a growing democracy. It is important that we make legal education available to as many people as possible and we should aim for the best practices,” she asserted.
She also addressed the need for potential reforms within the sector, acknowledging that a more detailed exploration of these reforms would be better suited for academic experts.
“In order to speak about the reforms, I will have to then specify what the shortcomings are and what amounts to best practices, and I think that is something that I may be unable to do sitting here.”
She added: “But the experts in the academic area would be the best placed to look at the best option for legal education in this country.”
