The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has said that plans are underway to support some 6,000 deferred students with the payment of school fees.

The university deferred the fee-owing students recently.

According to the university management, many of these students use their fees for business while others gamble with them.

The affected universities are owing a total of GHS55 million.

To help the students out of their predicament, the SRC has rollout a fund called ‘Kitewa Bi Swa’ otherwise known as SRC–KBS, toward paying the fees of the affected students.

“Already, thousands of the affected students have been settled after they were interviewed to ascertain they really needed help,” the Public Relations Officer of the SRC, Mr Kenneth Kelly Dwamena said.

He admitted some of his colleagues owe fees but denied claims that some students used their fees for other things.

Speaking on Accra 100.5 FM’s evening news on Wednesday, 20 April 2022, he stated that there is no record to substantiate the claims by the university.

He said the SRC has been in talks with the management of the school to extend the deadline for students who have not been able to pay up their fees.
