The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has given the government a two-week ultimatum to release funds for disbursement to students.

Speaking at a press conference at the Ghana International Press Centre, President of NUGS, Isaac Jay Hyde, expressed displeasure at how funds are being disbursed to student beneficiaries.

The students’ group has threatened to resort to their usual modus operandi to compel the government to act if the funds are not disbursed.

Mr Hyde said: “It is instructive to note that 35,000 undergraduate students assess the student loan from the fund annually …therefore, with the delay in the student loan disbursement, NUGS will like to state in the strongest term our total displeasure at how the agency is manning the fund...

“Many a student who rely on the fund are in limbo [and] state of hopelessness as to how they will survive this academic year without the disbursement. The situation is a dire one and needs a swift action from the government. Many tuition fees have not been paid; means of survival for several students in the tertiary universities have become next to impossible.

“Consequently, there will be massive exodus of students from tertiary institutions if no action is taken immediately to salvage the situation. This is a national security issue. We, therefore, give the government a two-week ultimatum to heed the cry of the teeming Ghanaian students in the various tertiary institutions in the country by releasing the funds … otherwise we will resort to our modus operandi which will compel the government to act”.
