Take good care of teachers – Kufuor to gov't
Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has urged the Akufo-Addo-led government to make teachers proud of their chosen profession by prioritising their conditions of service so they can impact students positively.
Speaking at the 70th-anniversary celebration and speech and prize-giving day of Prempeh College in Kumasi on Saturday, 30 November 2019, Mr Kufuor said taking good care of teachers will make them work professionally.
He noted that teachers are called upon not only to teach academics but to also act in place of parents in terms of character development.
Mr Kufuor said if the teachers are going to be professionals and have a positive impact on the character of students, then they should be looked after very well.
“If the teachers are going to be professional teachers, then I will plead that they should be looked after very well because they are called upon not only to teach the academics, they are called upon to act in place of parents in terms of character development…,” the former President pleaded.
“We must make them thoroughly professionals in teaching, they should be proud as [teachers]. These days, because salaries are not big, the teacher, even as he stands in front of the blackboard is thinking of the market, too, and it doesn’t work properly in developing character and literacy in the youth,” he added.
