Teachers threaten industrial action by end-Sept over performance contracts
Teacher unions including the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has warned the Ghana Education Service to put an immediate halt to an ongoing signing of performance contracts or its members will advise themselves.
GNAT General Secretary Thomas Musah told journalists at a joint press conference on Tuesday, 10 August 2021 that: “This is unacceptable because the unions do not know the details and the implications of the performance contract”.
“We call on the management of the GES to suspend the signing of the performance contract until it has been discussed with the unions”, the teachers demanded.
Mr Musa warned: “We, the teacher unions, are hereby, serving notice that if by the close of September 2021, all these issues are not resolved in full by the employer, then we will have no option than to advise ourselves in the best interest of our members within the framework of our collective agreement and applicable laws of Ghana”.
Apart from the performance contract issues, the teachers also raised concerns about their conditions of service.
