The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has launched an initiative dubbed “Accra for Art” aimed at supporting and encouraging artists to revitalise public walls and buildings through art.

The initiative is being sponsored by Nesstra Ghana Limited, a Ghanaian company in building and construction and suppliers of Suvinil Paints and supported by Ghana Graffiti, Paint in the Open (PITO) as well as the Ghana Association of Visual Artists (GAVA).

Speaking at the media launch at the City Hall in Accra on Thursday, 13 September 2019, the Metropolitan Chief Executive of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah, said the initiative forms part of efforts to beautify the city and make it clean by transforming public walls into colourful images.

He was, however, optimistic that the initiative would help curtail the indiscriminate posting of posters on public walls which ends up defacing the city.

“We want to make sure that the posters are not just removed but also beautify the walls through art to discourage and deter people from pasting posters," he emphasised.

Mr Adjei Sowah expressed gratitude to Nesstra, Ghana Graffiti, Ghana Association of Visual Artist (GAVA) and PITO Painting In The Open (PITO) for the support and partnership and assured that them the Assembly would continue to support artists and provide platforms for them to exhibit their creativity.

Mr Yaw Ampem-Darko Antwi, the Marketing and Communication Manager of Nesstra, in a speech, said the company was supporting the city's beautification drive with its Premium paint products worth GH¢150,000.00 adding that the gesture forms part of the company’s corporate social responsibility.

He described the premium Suvinil Paints as highly resistant to harsh weather conditions, highly washable, odourless, durable, and easily applicable and without any health challenges.

The mayor toured the Kinbu Senior High School wall mural designed by one of Accra's versatile artists and founder of the Ghana Graffiti and Mural Fine Artists, Muralist Mohammed Awudu, popularly known as Moh, and his team.
