Antonio Guterres condemns attack on UNISFA GHANBATT

The United Nations (UN) Secretary General, Antonio Guterres has condemned the series of attack that took place within UNISFA camps of Abyei which resulted in killing of a Ghanaian Peacekeeper.

This was contained in a statement delivered by the Acting Head of Mission and Force Commander (Ah HoM/FC) of the United Nations Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) Major General Benjamin Olufemi Sawyer when he paid a working visit to GHANBATT to commiserate with them on Friday 2 February, 2024.

The Forces Commander expressed his deepest condolence to the Battalion and assured them of the missions resolve to bring the perpetuators book.  He admonished troops to continue to wear their Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times and be extra vigilant whiles on duty.

Maj Gen Sawyer applauded the Battalion on their Civil Military Cooperation (CIMIC) activities and urged them to continue supporting the locals despite their attacks on UN peacekeepers in order to win their hearts and minds. He commended the Commanding Officer for his dedicated efforts and urged him to keep encouraging the troops in the difficult moment.

As part of his visit, he toured the camps to familiarise himself with the conditions in the ANTHONY Company Operating Base (COB) and visited the IDPs who fled into the Camps as a result of the recent attacks.
