The IGP visited the victims of the accident

The Ghana Police Service has said it will continue to maintain law and order in the country despite the recent upsurge in attacks on its officers in the line of duty.

The police made this known at a ceremony held on Sunday, 16 January 2022 in Accra, to receive the body of the officer who was stabbed to death at the Nyamebekyere Police Station in the Berekum District of the Bono Region by a suspect.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Director-General of Police Public Affairs, ACP Kwesi Ofori, called on the general public to accord officers the needed respect to enable them to discharge their duties.

He said: “The police is your friend”.

“They are there to combat crime and maintain peace and security. We should, thus, be accorded the necessary respect”.

“There is no need to attack us, as we are only working in your interest. Despite recent attacks on some of our men, we remain committed to our legitimate role of law enforcement.”

ACP Ofori further noted that despite the attacks on its officers, the service will not be deterred in the discharge of its duties.

"We will not be deterred at all. We will remain committed to our mandate, even at the peril of our lives.”

The police administration confirmed that a police officer was stabbed to death and in the process, the violent suspect was also shot and killed.

The incident happened at the Nyamebekyere police station in the Berekum District of the Bono Region.

According to reports, the suspect, Yaw Peprah, on arrival at the station, without any provocation, stabbed the deceased at the counter severely on the neck and other parts of the body with a knife concealed in his pocket.

The stabbed policeman was rushed to a hospital but died at the facility.

The suspect fled the scene and went into hiding at Komfuokrom also in Berekum.

When the police fished him out and attempted to arrest him, he resisted and also attempted to stab the officer.
