The Minister of Transport, Mr Kwaku Ofori Asiama, on Tuesday, July 19, 2022, inspected ongoing works on the Sunyani Airport rehabilitation project that started in 2018.

Mr Asiama was led by the MPs for Sunyani East and West constituencies, Kwasi Ameyaw-Cheremeh, who is also the Board Chairman for the Bui Power Authority; and Mr Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, who is also the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, respectively.

Speaking to the media, Mr Asiama explained the closure of the airport in 2015 by the Ghana Airports Company Limited, saying it was for safety reasons, due to the dilapidated nature of the runway and the absence of key logistics to monitor flights.

At the inception of the NPP government in 2017, some MPs stressed the need for the airport to be rehabilitated.

The Akufo-Addo-led government awarded the contract in 2018 for a two-phased rehabilitation exercise with the first phase encapsulating the extension and rebuilding of the runway, refurbishing of the terminal; stocking the airport with flight display gadgets, X-ray machines, and a fire post among others.

The second phase, which is expected to commence immediately after the inauguration of the first phase, would also see mini-airport city facilities, and a new terminal among others.

Mr Asiama said: “Today, we have come here with the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, Ghana Airport Company Limited, Ghana Airforce and the consultant to evaluate the completion of phase one for inauguration by the President”.

“You are witnessing this huge investment made here by this government to bring this airport back to life, of which commercial activities are expected to commence within the year”, he remarked.

The two Sunyani MPs held that it is part of their duty to push for projects such as the airport in both constituencies since the infrastructure strides across both Sunyani East and Sunyani West.

They also stated how serious they were about their town roads and that soon, all ongoing roads would be completed.
