Bagbin pledges to uphold Parliamentary integrity
The Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening Ghana's Parliament and safeguarding its autonomy.
Speaking to the press on Wednesday, 6 November 2024, Speaker Bagbin outlined his vision for a more resilient and robust legislative institution, underscoring the essential role Parliament plays in Ghana’s democracy.
"I cherish the role Parliament plays in our democracy, and my mission is to leave Parliament a stronger institution than I met it," Speaker Bagbin stated.
Addressing recent concerns over parliamentary independence, Speaker Bagbin emphasised that maintaining clear boundaries between the legislative branch and other arms of government is crucial for democratic governance.
He reiterated that Parliament must operate free from external influence to fulfill its mandate effectively.
"Parliament is alive and working. It has not been dissolved, prohibited, suspended, or terminated," Speaker Bagbin asserted, responding to public anxiety following an indefinite adjournment due to a walkout staged by members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The walkout, triggered by procedural disputes, left the chamber without a quorum, prompting the adjournment.
"The adjournment was done by the lawful authority, the Speaker of Parliament," Speaker Bagbin clarified.
"Let us stop pressing the panic buttons and fearmongering and allow the system to work,” Speaker Bagbin added.
