Bagre Dam spillage: GWCL to shut down N/R plant

General News
Ghana Water Company Limited

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) says it may soon halt its operations in Tamale and its environs in the Northern Region due to excess water spilt from the Bagre dam in neighbouring Burkina Faso.

The company, in a statement, said the action is to protect “its equipment and installations” because the level of intake of water in its dam must not exceed 36 feet but as of Tuesday, 20 September 2022, it was at 30.40 feet in addition to the Bagre Dam spillage".

It said any operation beyond the maximum operating water level will put the facility in jeopardy.

The spillage of the dam is an annual exercise to prevent any breakage and consequential flooding in low-lying communities, the destruction of crops, livestock and sometimes loss of lives in Burkina Faso and Ghana.

Thirty-five communities along the White Volta in the Bawku municipality, Bawku West, Garu, Binduri, Nabdam and Talensi districts are normally hit the hardest.

The GWCL has advised the residents in Tamale and its environs to store enough water and conserve water during the period.
