Bagre Dam spillage starts today as water levels reach 232.8 metres

SONABEL, the power utility company of neigbouring Burkina Faso, has announced that it will begin releasing water from the Bagre Dam on Monday, August 19, 2024.
In a statement signed by, Mr Jesse Kazapoe, the Basin Director of the White Volta Basin Secretariat at the Water Resources Commission, indicated that the dam's water level had reached 232.8 meters and continues to rise.
The release of water is expected to cause the White Volta River in Ghana to overflow its banks, occupying its usual flood plains, according to the statement.
"The Water Resources Commission was notified by SONABEL on Friday, August 16th, 2024, that the water level in the Bagre Dam has been steadily rising since Friday, August 2nd, 2024," the statement further explained.
In light of this development, residents, especially those living and working along the banks of the White Volta River, are urged to take precautionary measures to mitigate the potential impacts of the spillage.
"This information is provided to guide your flood management efforts.
We will keep you updated with additional details as they become available," the statement emphasized
