Bulletproof glass curtain to protect MPs coming – Speaker
Parliament is considering procuring bulletproof glass curtains to protect MPs, Speaker Prof Mike Oquaye has said.
He made the announcement on the floor of the house on Tuesday, 24 December 2019.
“Work on the Parliament House are ongoing and progress can be obviously seen”, Prof Oquaye announced, adding that the “visitors’ centre is also expected to be completed early next year”.
“It may interest members to know that the Board is seriously considering a bulletproof glass curtain to slate the gallery for the utmost protection of members while in the Chamber”, he noted.
The bulletproof glass curtain will divide the public gallery from the chamber.
There was a suicide attempt in Parliament within 2019 as a man in the public gallery attempted jumping down into the chamber during parliamentary business.
Also, the leader of the Economic Fighters League, Mr Ernesto Yeboah, created a scene in Parliament during the year, by yelling at the MPs as they deliberated on plans to build a new chamber.
