CID frees Ofosu-Ampofo, seizes electronic gadgets

General News
The Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police Service on Tuesday night released Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo after detaining him for five hours following his arrest.

A statement from the police said: “The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is investigating various acts of kidnapping and causing unlawful damage in which credible and actionable intelligence makes Mr. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), a suspect.”

The NDC leader's arrest followed his refusal to honour an invitation extended to him a few weeks ago in connection with the same issues for which he was arrested on Tuesday.

Mr Ofosu-Ampofo is to report back to the CID on Thursday, 13 June 2019.

In the meantime, all his electronic gadgets have been confiscated by the police.

Mr Ofosu-Ampofo is currently standing trial on two counts of conspiracy to cause harm and assault against a public officer after a voice resembling his was heard on a leaked tape inciting the party’s communicators to launch verbal attacks on the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Mrs Jean Mensa and the Chairman of the National Peace Council, Prof Emmanuel Asante.

The NDC has accused the government of using the security agencies to harass Mr Ofosu-Ampofo.
