Denkyira East MCE leads crackdown on illegal mining along Offin River

The Municipal Chief Executive for Denkyira East Municipal Assembly in the Central Region, Mr Anane Coleman, has led a coordinated operation with security and regulatory agencies to combat illegal mining activities along the Offin River.
The joint task force—comprising the Denkyira Divisional Police Command, NADMO, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB)—moved swiftly to confront illegal miners in the area, ordering an immediate halt to all unauthorised operations.
Mr. Coleman reaffirmed the Assembly’s firm commitment to ending illegal mining on water bodies and in forest reserves.
A recent report by Class FM’s Samuel Addo observed a noticeable decline in mining activity along the Offin River, signalling progress in the Assembly’s ongoing efforts.
As part of plans to intensify the crackdown, Mr. Coleman has formally requested two bulldozers from the Central Regional Coordinating Directorate.
The equipment will be used to dismantle illegal mining sites and support the reclamation of degraded lands.
In a forward-looking initiative, the MCE disclosed that the Assembly is collaborating with the Forestry Commission to cultivate seedlings for reforestation projects on reclaimed sites.
This greening campaign will also serve as an alternative livelihood program for local youth, promoting environmental restoration and sustainable development in the municipality.
