Digital toll coming March – AMA

General News
According to the Mayor, the assembly has integrated about 23 banks into the new revenue collection platform to afford users payment flexibility options

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) will from today, Friday, 27 January 2023, begin rolling out new receipts for payments of market and lorry park tolls in the metropolis.

There are also plans by the AMA to introduce a new digitised revenue collection system.

This was announced by the Accra Mayor, Elizabeth Kwatsoe Tawiah Sackey, on Thursday, 26 January 2023, when she led a sensitisation exercise to educate traders in the city on the roll-out of new receipts for payments of lorry park and market tolls in the metropolis.

The new receipts, have holograms in them to allow for easy identification of tickets purchased.

The new digitised revenue collection system, which will go into use from March this year is expected to rake in more revenue for the Assembly and make payments convenient.

It will also check revenue leakages, reduce alleged corruption and promote voluntary compliance while providing a conducive rate-paying environment.

Addressing journalists, the first female Mayor of Accra said the AMA was leveraging on the Government’s digitalisation drive to generate innovative solutions to block all revenue leakages, raise its internally generated funds and reduce the human element.

According to the Mayor, the assembly has integrated about 23 banks into the new revenue collection platform to afford users payment flexibility options.

The Mayor noted that: "Apart from using the banks, ratepayers can equally pay their bills via mobile money on all networks, QR codes, and a USSD code.”

She further noted that, all traders and market women in the metropolis would be registered and allocated Special Quick Response (QR) codes which will be used for the payment of bills before the introduction of the new revenue collection system in March.

The Mayor urged the traders and the entire business community to welcome the innovation in order to bring development to the Accra Metropolis.

For his part, the Metro Director of Budget, Noble Atsu Ahadzie, stressed that bills and receipts would be sent electronically to ratepayers without human interference.

He assured that a well-detailed stakeholder engagement plan to ensure all stakeholders are properly informed before the commencement of the digital revenue collection system would be carried out by the Assembly.
