The Board of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has approved the purchase of 700,000 meters, ECG's Managing Director, Mr Kwame Agyeman-Budu, has said.

He told Kwabena Prah Jnr (The Don) on Ghana Yensom on Accra 100.5FM on Wednesday, 4 March 2020 that: “ The Board has approved the purchase of 700,000 meters. All these are all to be smart meters.”

He also explained that the ECG is going to adopt online sale of the meters.

“The application will be done online. So you will apply online and pay online. Then the person will come to your home to fix it,” he said.

Touching on the recent blackouts in some parts of the country, Mr Agyeman-Budu said the country is not back to the era where load is shed popularly referred to as ‘dumsor’ as it is being speculated by some persons.

According to him the current erratic power supply being experienced in some parts of the country is due to some maintenance works ongoing.

The situation, he pointed out, will soon be over.

“Dumsor is not back,” he said.

Mr Agyeman-Budu noted that areas experiencing intermittent power supply could be due to faulty transformers and “that cannot be described as dumsor,” he stressed.
