Ghana has officially launched its first fleet of electric buses, marking a significant step in the nation's journey towards a cleaner and more inclusive public transport system.

The buses were unveiled on Wednesday, 27 November 2024, by Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as part of government’s commitment to modernising public transport and reducing the country’s carbon footprint.

In his welcome address, Albert Adu Boahen, Managing Director of Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL), described the initiative as a defining moment in Ghana’s transport history.

“This is not just about unveiling a new fleet; it is about embracing a future where public transport is cleaner, greener, and more inclusive,” he said, calling on Ghanaians to unite in support of the initiative.

A Transformative Vision for Transport

The electric buses, developed under the National Electric Vehicle Policy of 2023, represent a key component of Ghana’s Energy Transition Framework. They aim to reduce carbon emissions, enhance economic efficiency, and deliver improved passenger experiences.

Dr Bawumia commended MMTL for spearheading this transformative project, emphasising its alignment with Ghana’s broader climate goals. The initial deployment of 10 buses, part of a planned fleet of 100, signifies the beginning of a new era in Ghanaian public transport.

Accessibility and Comfort at the Core

Designed with accessibility in mind, the buses are equipped with wheelchair ramps, low floors, and priority seating, making them suitable for persons with disabilities and those with mobility challenges.

“These buses are a testament to our commitment to inclusivity. They are not just greener; they are designed to ensure hassle-free travel for all,” Mr Boahen stated.

Passengers can also expect quieter, smoother rides, further enhancing the overall commuting experience.

Economic and Operational Benefits

The introduction of electric buses is also expected to drastically reduce operational costs for MMTL. Mr Boahen explained that fossil fuel costs currently account for 55 per cent of revenue from intracity services, but with electric buses, this will drop to 15 per cent, leading to a 40 per cent reduction in operational expenses.

“These savings will allow us to reinvest in improving infrastructure, expanding services, and lowering fares for passengers,” he noted.

Innovations Driving Sustainability

MMTL has introduced several strategic measures to ensure the success of this initiative:

EV Charging Stations: Charging stations are being established at MMTL terminals to support the fleet and other EV operators.

Cashless Payment Systems: The “Tap and Go” initiative will streamline ticketing with payment options such as smart cards, QR codes, and mobile money.

Capacity Building: Staff have undergone extensive training to manage and operate the advanced technology.

Enhanced Customer Engagement: Improved communication channels will enable MMTL to gather feedback and enhance passenger satisfaction.

A Call to Action

The Managing Director of the MMTL also appealed to Ghanaians to support the transition.

“This is not just about unveiling a new fleet; it is about embracing a future where public transport is cleaner, greener, and more inclusive. We urge all Ghanaians to support this transition and be active participants in building a sustainable transport system,” Mr. Adu Boahen added.
